We have had a busy month here with activities.

Longstone School invited some of our residents to a tea party in their garden. When the residents arrived the school children took them a walk round their grounds and then they stopped for tea. They put on a large spread of buns, cakes and biscuits. The residents and children chatted. It was lovely to see them getting along and having things to talk about.

After our successfully two day inter-generational event we held here with P7 pupils from Brooklands Primary School they kindly invited us along to their leaver’s assembly. When the residents arrived at the school the pupils escorted them to their reserved front row seats. The principal and teacher who joined us here for our activities gave a lovely speech about how the children really enjoyed their time with us and how they had been talking about it ever since. They gave us letters that the children had wrote about their time here and how they enjoyed talking to the residents. It was lovely to see the pupils get excited when our residents arrived as they remembered each other. it was quite emotional.

We had a very special visitor this month. Pablo the donkey returned once again for a visit. We love to see the donkeys come. Our residents where all waiting in anticipation for Pablo to arrive. They loved stroking him and giving him hugs. I don’t know what it is about animals but they bring out the softer caring side of us all.

Ice cream soda day – following with the other celebration days we have had this month Rachael decided she would like to see if the residents have had ice cream sodas before and if not would they like them. There was a big turnout, more than we expected and many of them didn’t know what an ice cream soda was but they definitely enjoyed it as we ran out of ice cream with some residents have seconds and thirds.

Doughnut Day, it is always nice to celebrate things that put smiles on people’s faces. For doughnut day the residents made doughnuts with Rachael and Lauren. I don’t think the making them was of any practically interest to many of the residents but they all hung about for the tasting.

For national picnic week the resident joined Rachael in the George Allen lounge for an afternoon picnic where they had sandwiches, buns, biscuits and tray bakes with tea and coffee. They chatted whilst they ate. Sometimes it is nice to just allow the residents to sit and chat especially with people they wouldn’t normally talk to.

Residents turned their hand to flower pressing this month. They picked their flowers from the garden and quick dried them using an iron. They arranged them on to laminating sheets so they could make book marks or hang it from their rollators and Zimmer’s. They arranged their flowers so nicely and then the inevitable happened and the laminating machine decided it wasn’t going to play ball and would work. Maintenance kindly took a look at it and did get it working again but by that time only one resident waited around. Her book mark turned out lovely.

Some of our resident have started watching ‘The Crown’ series on Netflix every Friday afternoon. Some of our resident where very critical about it and thought they wouldn’t like and now they are hooked. As there is 3 series to get through it will be on the planner for a while.
