Activity Report January 2020

02/01/2020

AM: Armchair Yoga is popular with some of our residents. It consists of stretches, strengthening exercises and seated yoga poses. Exercises like this help with balance and core strength.

PM: Music mix is enjoyed by many of our residents who like to listen to music on the computers or watch documentaries. This activity allows the residents to have free rein on what they want to do.

AM: Request a tune activity takes place in the main lounge. The residents pick songs that they like and explain to everyone why they have picked it or what meaning it has to them. Lauren then plays the song for everyone. This is a popular activity.

PM: The start of a new year’s means a Quiz on the year before. Our residents gathered in the main lounge to take part in the big fat quiz of the year 2019. They answered questions on events that took place in 2019.  Each person had a clip board and quiz sheets so they were all playing against each other. It was very competitive and everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

PM: Rev Christ St John kindly agreed to hold our first Sunday service of the year and it was also his last one for Towell House due to other commitments with in his own church.

AM: We held our first residents committee meeting for 2020. Residents where very complimentary about Christmas and all the activities. They also commented on how nice Christmas day was and how lovely the dinner was.

PM: Inge entertained us this afternoon with her relaxing music. She plays chimes, singing bowls, guitars and xylophone. Our residents enjoy her different style of music.

AM: John Bradbury held a history talk in the George Allen Lounge about early Belfast. Majority of our residents really enjoyed the talk. One of the two ladies where not fussed.  This activity was funded by the Memory Legacy Lottery Funding.

PM: We had a lady called Sonia who came in and held a yoga session with our residents. Sonia will be coming in once a month to hold her yoga class.

AM: Moving and Grooving is another form of exercise for our residents. This form of exercise is done along to upbeat music.

PM: ‘The Royal House of Windsor’ documentary part 1 was requested by some residents who have a big interest in the Royal Family. They watch the documentary in the Pink Lounge.

AM: Active Communities play ball games in our main lounge with our residents. This activity receives a big turnout.

PM: Our residents enjoyed an afternoon of watching Annie in the pink lounge.

10/01/2020

PM: We are still hooked on the Netflix series of ‘The Crown’ and we have started a new season. Our residents have taken to the show and look forward to it every week.

AM: Musical Bingo was played in the main lounge. Many of our resident’s enjoy this version of bingo as they can have a sing a long while playing.

PM: There was a slight miscommunication with the donkey owners who were supposed to arrive this afternoon. Unfortunately they didn’t arrive so a game of charades and a sing a long was the substitution. The resident’s where disappointed that the donkeys didn’t arrive but sometimes these things happen.

AM: There was no activity this morning and activity sheets where left out in lounges as we needed a morning to organise ourselves for the year and for me to go through the memory legacy project with Rachael and Lauren.

PM: Watercolour painting has really taken off with more resident’s taken part each time. Some of our residents have become quite the painter. They comments on how relaxing and peaceful they find it.

PM: Bingo has really taken off these last few months with fifteen to twenty resident’s taking part. They play for a line and then full house and of course there are prizes to be won.

AM: Interactive crossword and cuppa is played in our George Allen Lounge. One of the computers is taken form the activity suite. The crossword is online and allows the resident’s to all see the screen and the clues together.

PM: Veganuary – Some of our residents turned their hand to making vegan waffles this month. They tasted lovely and no one could tell the difference. They had topping to go with them such as fruit, maple syrup and vegan cream.

PM: Hot topic is back and the residents has plenty to say about Stormont being back up and running, Brexit of course and Harry and Megan stepping down as Royals. Everyone has an opinion and likes to share their thoughts in this activity.

AM: Active Communities play ball games in our main lounge with our residents. This activity receives a big turnout.

PM: Winter was the theme for poetry afternoon. The resident’s each where given poetry books and where given some time to find a poem they liked. They then took it in turns to read the poems aloud and discus it. As always we finished with Jayne Ayre, she brings humour and lets the activity finish on a light hearted note. The resident’s always have a good chuckle

AM: Wee Care Day Nursery returned for another visit. The two and three year’s old bring to much life and energy with them it’s hard not to enjoy their company. They colour in pictures and deliver them around the lounge to the resident’s. They get up and sit beside some of the residents talk and some just perform and run around. It is such a lovely morning when they visit as everyone is smiling. We can wait for the good weather to come so we can take them out to our sensory garden.

PM: Once again we watch the Netflix’s series of ‘The Crown’. We watch this every Friday afternoon as it is a nice way to end the week.

PM: Rev B Gilmore from Knock Methodist Church held our Sunday service.

PM: Wesley Hamilton returned for the big sing on Sunday evenings. The residents have missed Wesley while he was off and are glad to see him return.

AM: Every Monday morning we start with an exercise activity. This is because Rachael or I give out the activity planners for the week in the morning and Lauren does the activity. We keep it the same so the resident’s always know what it on first on a Monday.

PM: Pamper afternoons are extremely busy. File and polish is popular followed by hand massages.

AM: Friends of Clarawood School made their first visit to us. Three members of staff accompanied four boys from the school. The boys all had Autism so we had planned a morning of board games with a small group of resident’s. We couldn’t believe how well it went. They all got on like a house on fire. The Staff from the school where really surprised. Our resident’s commented when they left that they really enjoyed the morning and how polite the boys where.

PM: This month we held Decembers and January birthday parties. We were unable to squeeze December’s birthday party in so we doubled up. Each residents who had they birthday in these two months received an invitation to the party. They play party games and have birthday cake. It is a lovely afternoon.

PM: Rhythm and movement held their musical workshop this afternoon. Philomena from rhythm and movement has a musical quiz, sing a long and they play percussion instruments. There is a big turnout for rhythm and movement and Philomena is very much liked.

AM: Musical Bingo was played in the main lounge. Many of our resident’s enjoy this version of bingo as they can have a sing a long while playing.

PM: Our Donkeys arrived! The resident’s where delighted. Denis the donkey was 23years old and so gentle with the residents. Once Denis made his way round the main lounge he then took a walk round our corridors to see the resident’s in their rooms. The residents were very surprised when they opened their doors to see a donkey standing there. This is part of our memory legacy project and comes under our animal therapy. The donkeys are so calming and its lovely to see the interaction.

PM: Due to the upstairs extension being closed due to maintenance work the main lounge was busier than usual. We decided to put bingo on in the main lounge as a lot of people can join in. Rachael was the bingo caller and I helped a select few residents who would have some difficulty in seeing the numbers.

AM: Friends of Clarawood returned again this week to have a game of bingo with our residents. This time we have five residents, 2 staff members from the school and 3 pupils. The bingo went down really well and the pupils help some of our residents during the game. There was some competitiveness during the bingo. Tea/juice and biscuits was enjoyed half way through.

AM: We have re-established our knit and natter group. This was the ladies first gathering where they discussed what they would like to do and how they would like the activity to go. They also started to teach Rachael how to knit.

AM: Active Communities play ball games in our main lounge with our residents. This activity receives a big turnout.

PM: This afternoon residents enjoyed making fruit kebabs with Rachael. There was strawberries, banana, grapes, raspberries, pineapple and apple along with marshmallows and chocolate. Each resident made their own kebab and then enjoyed eating it.

AM: We enjoyed another episode of ‘The Crown’ this morning in the pink lounge. We are coming to the end of season 3.

PM: Bertie Crutchley and friends provided an hour of gospel singing with the residents. Bertie and his friends are so popular and receives the most turn out that any other entertainer. Bertie also knows a number of residents so there is always a lot of laughter.
